When I learned that ECLI-VIBES would lose $637,667 in annual funding for survivor services, my first thought was not about a budget. It was about the phone ringing late at night—and the person on the other end who needs us to answer.

For years, we have made survivors a promise: when they are ready to reach for safety, they will not have to find it alone. I intend to do everything I can to protect this work, but we cannot do it alone.

I am incredibly grateful to have had the opportunity to intern and volunteer with ECLI-VIBES. I saw firsthand how much care, compassion, and dedication goes into creating a safe and welcoming space for survivors, guests, volunteers, and community members.

My supervisors, Danielle and Gina, made it a priority to ensure that volunteers felt supported and appreciated—and that every guest felt safe, welcomed, respected, and cared for. Their passion was evident every day.

Some of my most meaningful experiences came from volunteering in the food pantry and building connections with guests. Being surrounded by people who genuinely care about the mission was inspiring. I am proud to have been a small part of this organization and the difference it makes.

Growing up in an underprivileged environment, seeing children harmed by aggressive parents and mothers abused by partners was commonplace. Many of us later entered abusive, unhealthy, and potentially life-threatening relationships because we had learned to see abuse as normal—or because the person hurting us was also the person providing our home.

This cycle needs to end. ECLI-VIBES gives people a safe place to go. It saves the lives of people experiencing abuse and the lives of children and others who witness it.

If support like this had been widely available in my neighborhood, the abuse might have stopped for many of my friends before it seriously affected their adult lives. Lifesaving programs should not be defunded.
